Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission – Biennial Bridge Inspections
Client: Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission
Location: Statewide, PA
Type/Size: Routine NBIS and Underwater Inspections, High Mast Lights, Retaining and Sound Walls, and Reports
Services: Bridge Inspection
PCS performed the biennial NBIS inspection of Pennsylvania Turnpike bridges, including the underwater inspection of many of the structures. PCS’s portion of this project included 122 bridges, 80 high mast lights, and 129 retaining and sound walls. PCS teams utilized bucket trucks, manlifts, and inspection cranes to gain access to reach critical areas. Using state-of-the-art bridge inspection equipment, our teams precisely measured section loss on critical members and provided detailed sketches of defects to ensure accurate structural analysis. Technical reports were submitted for each structure, which included an inspection summary, field notes, digital photographs, ratings, and maintenance recommendations. Data was also updated in the Pontis Bridge Management System. BMS2 inventory data was reviewed and updated as required. The underwater inspections on this project reported details on defects and included streambed evaluations for existing and potential scour and the substructure’s vulnerability to scour. An underwater inspection contract utilizing a firm with in-house diving proved to have many advantages in assuring the overall success of the contract. In-house services streamlined coordination, improved inspection efficiency, and allowed for instant response.
