SR 0309, Section S05 – Bethlehem Pike
Client: PennDOT, Engineering District 6-0
Location: Bucks and Montgomery Counties, PA
Type/Size: Safety Improvements for 5-Mile Corridor
Services: Highway Engineering
The goal of this project was to enhance safety along 5 miles of the heavily traveled and commercially developed Bethlehem Pike by improving access to local businesses. A primary goal was to provide a consistent roadway configuration along the entire length of the project. The roadway was widened by 12′ to provide space for a center-turn lane that runs the entire length of the project. The widening affected several small bridges that had to be widened and the parapets replaced with safety barrier shapes.
A large number of driveway adjustments were involved due to the many parking areas and adjacent businesses. The widening included concrete curbing, extension of storm drains, and installation of new inlets. An interesting project component was replacing the fiber optic interconnection for the existing traffic signals that included emergency, train, and audible preemption. Another intelligent transportation facility included the communication conduit for video monitoring. These communication lines linked the two major intersections that bracketed the project and are part of a larger transportation system.
