SR 0078, Section 12B Berks County, PennDOT District 5-0

The SR 0078, Section 12B project involved the replacement of two interstate overpasses in Berks County, PA. SR 0078 is a divided four-lane limited access interstate with an ADT of 48,417 and 35% truck traffic.

The 110′ single span bridge carrying T-182 and the 230′ two-span continuous bridge carrying SR 1015 were reconstructed using welded steel plate girders with a composite reinforced concrete deck slab, mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls, and pile supported cast in place concrete abutments. The approach roadway elevations were raised approximately 3′ to eliminate the substandard vertical clearance and provide 16′-6″ clearance above the travel lanes of the interstate. Uninterrupted traffic patterns were maintained on SR 0078 for the duration of construction. The SR 1015 structure replacement was staged using a single lane and temporary traffic signals at each approach. A detour was implemented during reconstruction of bridge T-812.

PCS prepared the conceptual designs for these bridge replacements using the Design-Build project delivery methodology. PCS prepared the project survey, established existing legal right-of-way lines, and prepared the conceptual TS&L, roadway, and traffic control plans. PCS provided the conceptual design information and CAD files to the Contractor’s designer who prepared the final construction plans. PCS reviewed the final construction plans prepared by the contractor and provided construction consultation and shop drawing reviews during construction.
